Herat Women Shelter

The project was established in 2003 by UNHCR on temporary basis for at risk women returning to Heart from neighboring Iran. VWO took over this responsibility and maintained the facility for three months with the financial assistance of UNHCR.  In order to provide more and better services to these at-risk women, UNHCR and VWO made a joint effort to secure funds for this particular project and finally the Embassy of Denmark, Kabul provided funds in October, 2005.  The project was established on strong footings and the very first ever shelter for at-risk women was put in place in Afghanistan. The project is currently funded by US Department of State through US Embassy, Kabul for a period of Six calendar months. VWO is making efforts to secure long term (5 years) funding for the project for sustainability.

Family Conflict Resolution Center

The family conflict resolution centre is an integral part of the above mentioned Herat shelter project and is established in the main office of VWO. The main objective of the project is to reduce the violence against women through family counseling and protect women and girls from abuse by resolving petty issues at the very beginning. The project is funded by State dept-US Embassy, Kabul for Six calendar months. The family counseling center provides legal and psychosocial counseling, legal support and has a prominent coordination and collaboration with relevant government and non-government stakeholders in the region. The project enjoys a good reputation among the society and other stakeholders as it provides services to more than 100 families every month.

Legal Advice Bureau

Established in July 2011 with financial aid from global rights, Kabul for three years to provide legal assistance to women seeking access to justice. It has three lawyers and one provincial project director. LAB is located in family court building and is working closely with senior legal advisors from global rights and persecutors from Herat attorney general office and Herat directorate of justice.

Badghis Women Shelter

Badghis shelter project has been established in Qalai Naw city at two separate buildings as Shelter and Shelter office as Family Counseling Centre (FCC) since October. 2009.  This project is funded by U.S. Department of State under a Federal Assistance Award through US Embassy in Kabul, for twenty months. The Shelter project provides accommodation, food, living facilities, legal and psychosocial counseling, legal support, vocational training to at risk women and victims of human trafficking. Efforts are then made to find durable solutions to resolve their cases and reintegrate them safely as a common member of Afghan society. A Coordination and Cooperation Committee (CCC) also is established to facilitate resolution of complicated cases and prevent human trafficking. The project has significantly benefited at-risk women and victims of human trafficking and as such needs to be established on long term basis.

Ghor & Farah Women Shelters

Looking into the overwhelming number of cases in Herat women shelter from other provinces of the region, VWO has recently (October, 2012) established women shelter projects in the provinces of Ghor and Farah with the financial assistance of IDLO/INL through Colombo Plan. Initially funded for two calendar years, the projects hold invaluable importance for the women’s rights issues in the Western region. Both the provinces are extremely backward and under the influence of hardliners where gross violation of women’s rights is a norm.

Women Resource Center

Funded by the US Embassy, Kabul, the project addresses the critical aspect of capacity building of Department of Women Affairs (DoWA) in particular and of women and girls in general. A resources center equipped with computers, printers, internet and a small library is established within the premises of the DoWA, Farah that will provide staff of DoWA, school & college students and educated women and girls to build their capacity and be able to serve their communities.

Nimroz Shelter Project

In order to address the needs of victims of violence and other at-risk women in the province of Nimroz, VWO has recently signed a contract with USAID, Kabul for the establishment of a women shelter there. The province shares borders with neighboring Iran and thousands of returnee and deportee women need such a facility there. Initially funded for two calendar years, the project will complete the picture for the Western region in terms of protection of women’s rights, reduction of violence against women, rule of law and access to formal justice.
